For the people of Scotland, and we will always stand up for Independence.
This week I secured a debate in the House of Commons which shone a light on the latest example of Scotland’s massive energy resources, in this case offshore wind, being cabled south, but with Scotland getting very little in return. No financial payment to the Scottish Government or local councils like mine in East Lothian, no supply chain jobs and no benefit for the communities who look out onto the windfarms.
All of this despite the fact that the energy being cabled south, via the Eastern Link Undersea Cable will be enough to power 2.8 million homes. Of course there is a need for the Eastern Link between Scotland and England as it will ease capacity on the existing grid but where is the windfall for Scotland from our natural energy bounty?
What we are seeing is a repeat of the theft of our natural resources which we saw with oil and gas from the 1970s onwards. There is an old saying – fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. For the sake of our people, half of whom are facing fuel poverty this winter, we cannot afford to be fooled again!
The squandering of energy rich Scotland’s resources while our people are fuel poor is the issue of our time and it is one that ALBA intends to make our own as we campaign for our two magnificent By Election candidates in Glasgow Linn and Broxburn/Uphall/Winchburgh in West Lothian.
Neale Hanvey MP and I are getting on with the job of using our interventions at Parliament to make the case for independence. You can watch Neale provide a video update here:
Others may prefer to walk out when these issues are being discussed but ALBA will always stand up for the people of Scotland and we will always stand up for Independence. I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail.
Yours for ALBA,
Depute Leader, ALBA Party
